Queens Game – A Smart and Relaxing Logic Puzzle Challenge

The PuzzleVuzzle Queens Game is a logic puzzle built around a deceptively simple rule: place exactly one queen (crown) in each row, each column, and each colored area on the grid. That is the whole task. No arithmetic, no vocabulary, no trivia. Just a colored grid and a set of placement rules that have to work together.

It sounds easy until you sit down and try it. The moment you place your first queen (crown), it removes an entire row, an entire column, and all squares diagonally touching it. Suddenly the remaining options for every other crown become narrower than they appear. In a few placements, the grid tightens up considerably and you're working through real logic to figure out where the rest of the queen (crown) can possibly go.

This is one of those puzzles where the rules are short enough to explain in two sentences and deep enough to keep you thinking for several minutes each game. For path-drawing logic, also try Zip elsewhere on PuzzleVuzzle.

How to Play Queens Game

Step 1: Understand what the grid is telling you - The grid is divided into colored regions. In a seven-crown puzzle, there are seven colors, seven rows, seven columns, and seven queens to place. Each color gets exactly one queen. Each row gets exactly one queen. Each column gets exactly one queen. All three conditions must be met at the same time.

Step 2: Tap once to mark a square with the X - When you know that the queen cannot go to a certain square, tap it once to place an X mark there. This is a process-of-elimination tool. Marking the squares you rejected helps you keep track of your reasoning without losing your place. Good puzzle solvers consistently use X marks.

Step 3: Double tap to place the Queen (crown) - When you are sure the crown is in a certain square, double tap it. The crown appears. Immediately, the entire row and column the crown sits in is unavailable to any other crown. Any square touching that crown diagonally is also eliminated.

Step 4: No two Queens (crowns) can touch, not even diagonally - This is the rule that catches most people off guard the first time. In chess, queens can attack rows, columns and diagonals. In the Queens game, the restriction is that crowns cannot be adjacent to each other in any direction, including diagonally. Two queens (crowns) that share a diagonal neighbor are not allowed, even if they are in different rows and columns.

Step 5: Use Clear Marks to reset without starting over - If your X Marks get messed up or you want to rethink your approach, Clear Marks clears all X Marks and crown placement so you can start fresh with the same puzzle grid.

Step 6: Complete the puzzle by placing all Queens (crowns) - The puzzle is solved when there is exactly one queen in each row, each column and each colored region and no two queens are adjacent or touching.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many queens do I need to place?
One queen per row, one per column, and one per colored region.
Can two queens share a row?
No. Each row must have exactly one queen.
Can two queens share a column?
No. Each column must have exactly one queen.
Can queens touch diagonally?
No. No two queens can be adjacent to each other in any direction, including diagonally. Even if two queens are in different rows and columns, they cannot share a diagonal border.
What does tapping once do?
Tapping once puts an X on that square, indicating you've rejected it as a queen position. X marks are an elimination tool that doesn't affect the solution, they just help track your logic.
What does tapping twice do?
Tapping twice puts a queen on that square. Only use this when you are sure the queen belongs there.
What is the Clear Marks button for?
It removes all your X marks and queen placements from the current puzzle without generating a new one. If you want to rethink your approach from scratch on a single grid, use it.
Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?
Yes. Each Queens Game puzzle is designed to have a single valid placement for all queens. Recheck your elimination if you get two valid options, one of which is ruled out by the obstacle you missed.
Is there a time limit?
No. The timer tracks your solving time but does not end the game. Take as much time as you need.
Does New Puzzle change the grid?
Yes. The new puzzle generates a completely fresh grid with a new color layout. Your current puzzle has changed.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes. The tap mechanic works with touch. One tap for the X mark, two taps to place the queen, same as on desktop.
